The Beginnings of Shakespearean (and Jonsonian) Forgery: Attribution and the Politics of Exposure, Part II
This two-part essay surveys the early history of literary forgeries concerning Shakespeare and Ben Jonson, focusing on the so-called Macklin letter(s) of 1748, which is investigated in detail in Part 1 of the essay (September 2004). Part 2, which considers alternative candidates for authorship of the letter(s), concentrates on the alleged Shiels imposture of 1753 and the multiple fabrications associated with William Chetwood in the period 174956.
