Rutt's Edition of Pepys

Alan Roper

The title-page of The Life, Journals, and Correspondence of Samuel Pepys (1840) states only that the text was transcribed by the Reverend John Smith from shorthand originals in the Bodleian Library. However, Smith's transcript was subsequently edited by John Towill Rutt, whose contribution has gone unremarked by librarians and scholars of Pepys. This article restores Rutt's claim to the text as published, and traces its reception from 1840 to the present.
